Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Peace be with you!
Allow me to take up a few minutes of your time. 2020 marks the 95th anniversary of St. Margaret’s Church. The Parish Council had prepared a series of events to celebrate our anniversary but unfortunately, all planned activities had to be suspended due to the pandemic. The Corona Virus Disease “COVID 19” has disrupted the entire world and Hong Kong is no exception.
The main reason for this fundraising request at this particular juncture is because a good number of tiles on the exterior wall of our Parish Centre, built 35 years ago, have been sporadically falling off. As this poses a serious safety concern to our parishioners, visitors and staff, we have decided to rectify the situation as soon as possible. In addition, we want to take this opportunity to rectify other structural problems associated with the wear and tear of an aged building.
In addition to the safety concerns, we would like to undertake the works at this time to: (1) minimize the repair cost by focusing on the damaged areas proactively before the situation worsens; (2) launch the work prior to the new year to capture a lower cost base since statistically, construction costs have been increasing circa 10% annually over recent years; (3) help boost employment in the construction sector as our economy as a whole has been severely dampened by COVID 19. We hope that our parishioners will participate passionately and jointly. We can stand together and do our part to stimulate the near stagnant economy. We are requesting our parishioners to participate and donate generously to this worthwhile cause as much as they are able to.
We shall attempt to conduct the below mentioned works during the dry winter months and hopefully completing all requisite repairs before October 2021 in time to celebrate St. Margaret’s Church’s 96th anniversary.
Having received permission from the Diocesan Chancellor, Fr. Lawrence Lee, and the parish construction committee’s professional advice on the repair methodology and cost estimates, we have decided to initiate this request for donations in order to launch the repair works. We are hoping that the overall donations can attain the target of HK$10 million to cater for the anticipated works that include:
1) The surface of whole building will be protected and strengthened by epoxy spray to protect and preserve the original tiles.
2) Rusted and fractured reinforced steel bars will be repaired.
3) Aged and blocked piping will be fixed or replaced.
4) Canopy joining the Church and Parish Centre will be replaced,
As a member of our St. Margaret’s family, your support is crucial to the success of this donation drive and pledge. Besides supporting the repair work of the Parish Centre, any surplus funds will be sent to “Diocesan Fund raising for Church Building and Development” to support the building of a new church in Tung Chung and the extension of St Joseph’s Church in Fanling. Please make your contribution by writing a cheque in favour of “St. Margaret’s Church” and leave it with our parish reception. We pray that Our Lord will help us complete this task.
“You are being enriched in every way for all generosity, which through us produces thanksgiving to God” (2 Corinthian 9:11)
